Come and learn the fascinating and absorbing hobby of natural dyeing with plants. Learn how to use an Indigo Vat and Weld to make blue and yellow dyes.

The fascinating art of over dyeing to make the historical Lincoln Green (fabled to have been worn by Robin Hood and his merry men), then changing the colour by using modifiers. You will take home pieces of history.

 

1.You will learn all about mordants and how to use them, and why they are used.

2. The differences between adjective, substantive and vat dyes. How to prepare wool ready for using these dyes.

3. How to make a dye from a dried plant. Then how to use this dye on your wool

4. Learn all about the Indigo Vat, watch and record how it is made. Then hands on experience of using it.

5. Experiment with the over dyeing, to achieve the Lincoln Green.

6. Have fun with using modifiers of copper and Iron to change the colours of the blue, yellow, and greens.

 

You will go away with dyed yarns and full handouts to reproduce these colours at home. They will not be exact as the water quality does vary across the Country.

 

Sue was taught how to use natural dyes as a young child by her Mother. While the fascination of dyeing has never left her, Sue has been teaching dyeing at Gloucestershire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers for the last 12 years. Has worked for the National Trust for the past 13 years as a Roman dyer with 22 years as a volunteer.

Sue has gained a distinction in the Certificate of Achievement in Natural Dyeing with the Guild of W,S&D. With her final piece of work in the Guild handbook for the CoA. Sue is now studying for her next qualification in natural dyeing.

 

NOTES FOR THIS CLASS ON WHAT TO BRING: 

Please wear shoes not sandals.

An apron to cover your clothes and washing up gloves to protect your hands from the indigo.

A washing up bowl to put your wet yarn in.

Protective bags for carrying your wet yarn home in, at least three.
